Karun Temple

Qasr Qarun is an archaeological site that is a temple in an ancient city located near Lake Qarun in the Fayoum Governorate

About 8 kilometers north of Lake Qarun in the Egyptian city of Faiyum, southwest of Cairo, the Al-Sagha Palace, built of limestone and sandstone, is located on an area estimated at 180 meters. It belongs and the secrets of the rooms inside it.

The temple of Qasr Qarun, as it is mentioned in the archaeological sources, is a temple from the Greco-Roman period and was dedicated to the worship of the god Sobek and “Dionysius”, the god of wine and love “among the Romans,” but the inhabitants of the region in Islamic times called it Qasr Qarun because of its presence near Lake Qarun next to it Which was called by this name due to the large number of centuries and bays in it, so it was called at the beginning Lake (the Horns), and it was diverted to Lake Qarun; Knowing that this lake was originally the remnant of Lake Morris in Pharaonic history, and as for the number of rooms in the temple, it was less than a hundred rooms, and it was used to store the grain and the uses of the temple priests at this time.

One of the recent studies confirmed the passage of the sun on the Qasr Qarun temple on December 21 of each year, and a committee of archaeologists was formed, which confirmed what was mentioned in the study and that the sun is perpendicular to the Holy of Holies in the temple at this time and the orthogonality lasts about 25 minutes.

And a number of archaeological researchers had published research on the sun’s perpendicularity to the Holy of Holies in the temple on this date every year, which corresponds to the winter transition, and the committee has confirmed the correctness of the sun perpendicular to the main and right compartment in the Holy of Holies, and the sun did not perpendicular to the left compartment, This was confirmed by the research because this cabin contained the mummy of the crocodile, the symbol of the god (Sobek), the god of Faiyum in the Pharaonic times, who should not be exposed to the sun so that the mummy would not be harmed, especially since this mummy is supposed to be in the other world and the sun shines on the world of the living .
