Mountain of the Dead

The Mountain of the Dead is located 2 kilometers from the Siwa area of ​​the Marsa Matrouh governorate, and it was discovered by chance in 1944 during World War II when the people of Siwa sought refuge in the mountain and discovered tombs in it, which is a conical mountain with a height of 50 meters and is made of calcareous soil and is an ancient cemetery This mountain is distinguished by its wondrous appearance, and from the bottom to the top are tombs of the dead carved in the form of a beehive of stone in the form of regular and successive rows in a geometric shape similar to the shape of the ancient oasis. This ancient cemetery dates back to the 26th family and extends to the Ptolemaic and Roman eras, and these tombs combine in their design ancient Egyptian and Greek art, and this merging arose as a result of the mixing of cultures. Some of these tombs are located at a great depth and each cemetery is a rectangular corridor that ends with a large square courtyard and this courtyard branches out from it a group of openings dedicated to placing the dead. Among the most beautiful tombs in the cemetery of Si Amon, which belongs to one of the wealthy Greeks who used to follow the ancient Egyptian religion. He lived in Siwa and was buried there according to that religion, and that cemetery was well preserved. This cemetery has a set of bas-reliefs and includes a drawing representing the gods Nat while standing under the sycamore tree. Then another cemetery called the crocodile cemetery and named after the drawings engraved on it and it is a yellow crocodile shape representing the god Sobek and this tomb represents a structure like a cave formed From three rooms, the owner of this cemetery has not been identified yet. And another cemetery called Theber Pathot, which is decorated with charming drawings and inscriptions dyed in the red color that predominates on the pottery vessels used in Siwa until now, and in that cemetery lies a stone coffin placed on the floor of the burial room. As you go up to the top of the mountain, you can see wonderful views of the beauty and attraction of the Siwa Oasis that formed in All in all, many, many landmarks and treasures of the Sahara Desert.

Dr. Mukhtar Al-Kasani, a professor of archeology, says that the Mountain of the Dead contains thousands of tombs carved over the rocks, and the tombs revolve with a high rotation carved in the form of a beehive, which is one of the most beautiful and strangest archaeological sites in Egypt, and it is one of the wonders of Siwa, which is a conical mountain that tends slightly North of Shali Castle, with a height of 50 meters, it is an ancient cemetery.
